Damen Launches First Fully Electric Tug for Port of Antwerp-Bruges
Damen Shipyards Group, renowned Dutch shipbuilder, has achieved a significant milestone with the launch of the RSD-E Tug 2513, a pioneering fully electric tug destined for the Port of Antwerp-Bruges. Upon its scheduled delivery later this year, the RSD-E Tug 2513 will mark a historic moment as the first fully electric tug to navigate European waters.
The unveiling of the vessel, christened Volta 1, took place at Damen Song Cam Shipyard in Vietnam. This milestone launch is part of a comprehensive six-vessel order catering to the needs of the Port of Antwerp-Bruges.
Equipped with cutting-edge technology, the RSD-E Tug 2513 boasts impressive operational capabilities. With the ability to perform at least two towage operations on a single charge and a rapid two-hour recharge time, the vessel sets new standards in efficiency and sustainability. Its robust battery system, designed to withstand 30,000 cycles, ensures longevity that aligns with the vessel’s lifecycle.
In addition to delivering the vessel, Damen is committed to providing comprehensive support to the Port of Antwerp-Bruges, including the provision of charging equipment and onshore charging infrastructure essential for the seamless operation of the electric tug.
With a firm commitment to environmental stewardship, each vessel in the order complies with IMO Tier III regulations, with the RSD-E Tug 2513 achieving zero-emission operations. The port’s strategic vision is geared towards progressively reducing emissions, exemplified by its existing hydrogen-powered tug and upcoming operations with a retrofitted methanol tug.
