German propulsion system manufacturer Schottel has secured a contract to supply two RudderPropellers of the SRP 360 type in the LE-Drive variant for the newest addition to Guangzhou Port Group’s fleet, an advanced e-tug.

Each SRP boasts an impressive input power of 1,500 kilowatts and a propeller diameter of 2.2 meters, making it a formidable force in the realm of marine propulsion. The adoption of the eco-friendly L-Drive aligns perfectly with the e-tug’s cutting-edge propulsion framework.

The embedded L-Drive variant of the SRP offers a significant advantage by reducing the installation height of the thrusters, a crucial consideration for vessels like tugs where space is often at a premium, as emphasized by Schottel.

The innovative e-tug has been meticulously designed by Guangzhou Marine Engineering Corporation and will be expertly crafted by Lianyungang Hongyun. Spanning approximately 37.9 meters in length and 10.5 meters in beam, it is tailored for pivotal roles such as berthing assistance, escorting, and towing within the bustling confines of the Port of Guangzhou.

Upon completion, the tug will join the esteemed fleet of Guangzhou Port Group’s tug operating division, reinforcing its position as a prominent player in South China’s maritime landscape. With over 20 tugs already equipped with Schottel’s propulsion systems in operation or currently under construction, this collaboration further solidifies the enduring partnership between the two entities.

In a testament to its technological prowess, the vessel will undergo certification procedures by the China Classification Society (CCS), obtaining N and E i-Ship ratings. This designation underscores its status as a vessel equipped with an intelligent navigation system and an intelligent energy efficiency management system.

In parallel with this milestone, Schottel continues to make waves globally, having recently secured a contract to provide propulsion for the United States’ inaugural all-electric tug, the eWolf. Owned by US shipowner and operator Crowley and constructed by Master Boat Builders, the eWolf represents a significant leap forward in the realm of sustainable maritime operations.
