In a significant development for the maritime industry, SKF’s cutting-edge ballast water management system (BWMS), the BlueSonic BWMS, has successfully completed rigorous shipboard and environmental approval testing and is now commercially available. The primary function of the BlueSonic BWMS is to treat ballast water effectively, preventing the transfer of invasive species such as microbes from one shipping region to another. What sets this system apart from its competitors is its remarkable efficiency and eco-friendly approach. Instead of relying on harsh chemicals, as is common in most ballast water treatment systems, the BlueSonic BWMS uses ultrasound to continuously clean the UV lamps, ensuring simultaneous disinfection and lamp maintenance.

Traditional UV systems require periodic downtime to remove biofilm from the lamp’s surface, a process typically involving chemicals that contribute to pollution. Alternatively, some systems use electrolysis, which can generate hydrogen and pose safety risks. SKF’s innovation eliminates the need for such interventions, making the system both cost-effective and environmentally friendly.

The adoption of the SKF BlueSonic BWMS has been accelerated by comprehensive land-based, shipboard, and environmental testing, along with the vital IMO type approval. Several major contracts are currently under negotiation, and SKF anticipates that the first systems will be installed and operational in the coming months.

The versatility of the SKF BlueSonic BWMS is evident in its ability to be configured for various flow rates, ranging from 150 to 1,500 m³/hr. Furthermore, SKF offers a comprehensive range of support services, including design, 3D scanning, crew training, and class certification.
