In a bid to cater to diverse customer demands, Wärtsilä Energy Storage & Optimisation (Wärtsilä ES&O) has rolled out its latest innovation – the Quantum 2 containerised battery energy storage system (BESS). This cutting-edge solution promises to revolutionize the energy storage landscape with its unique blend of higher energy density and compact design, facilitating hassle-free transportation to project sites while ensuring stringent fire safety standards.

Fresh off the heels of the GridSolv Quantum‘s debut in 2020, Quantum 2 emerges as a game-changer tailored to deliver unparalleled cost-efficiency and performance benefits for large-scale energy storage deployments spanning 2- to 8-hour applications. According to a spokesperson from Wärtsilä ES&O, Quantum 2‘s streamlined design enables compact project layouts at high energy density sites, adhering to ISO standards for 20-ft containers.

Distinguishing itself from its predecessor, Quantum 2 boasts IP67-rated, liquid-cooled lithium-ion (Li-ion) battery modules that come pre-installed and factory-tested, ensuring compliance with key safety benchmarks such as NFPA855. This launch closely follows the introduction of another Wärtsilä ES&O marvel, Quantum High Energy (Quantum-HE), marking a strategic move to cater to diverse energy storage needs.

Quantum-HE, characterized as an evolution of the original Quantum modular enclosure, excels in augmenting energy density incrementally, making it an ideal fit for smaller project sites. In contrast, Quantum 2 emerges as the go-to solution for larger project sites, owing to its larger enclosure and ease of transportation, which significantly reduces servicing and handling complexities.

Furthermore, Quantum 2 introduces innovative thermal and humidity controls, addressing concerns related to moisture and dust. Its hybrid cooling system, customizable to incorporate HVAC equipment, enhances operational flexibility while minimizing auxiliary power costs during commissioning. The introduction of IP67-rated battery modules ensures enhanced protection against ingress of solids and liquids, mitigating risks associated with onsite installations.

As with all Wärtsilä ES&O BESS products, Quantum 2 is powered by the GEMS Digital Energy Management Platform, offering a seamless integration of monitoring, control, and safety functionalities. Notably, Quantum 2‘s compliance with the International Convention for Safe Containers (CSC) ISO standard enables hassle-free transportation via standard sea and road shipment methods.

In light of recent fires at BESS projects, Wärtsilä‘s emphasis on stringent safety measures underscores its commitment to industry-leading standards.
