Maersk Unveils Dual-Fuel Methanol Vessel “A.P. Møller” in Singapore

Maersk celebrated a milestone today with the arrival of its latest dual-fuel methanol-powered container vessel, the A.P. Møller, in Singapore. The ship, named after Arnold Peter Møller, founder of A.P. Moller – Maersk, is the ninth vessel in the company’s fleet designed to run on methanol. This event marked her maiden voyage from Asia to Europe.

The naming ceremony, hosted by Robert Uggla, Chair of the A.P. Moller – Maersk Board of Directors, featured Ms. Chan Su-Shan, wife of Temasek Holdings’ CEO, as the ship’s godmother. Distinguished guests included Mr. Murali Pillai, Minister of State for Singapore’s Ministry of Law and Ministry of TransportMr. Dilhan Pillay Sandrasegara, CEO of TemasekMr. Ong Kim Pong, Group CEO of PSAMr. Teo Eng Dih, CEO of the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA); and other government officials, Maersk customers, and employees.

Built at Hyundai Heavy Industries in Ulsan, South Korea, the A.P. Møller can transport up to 16,592 TEU (twenty-foot equivalent units). This ship is part of a larger initiative to expand Maersk’s dual-fuel methanol fleet, with 18 vessels scheduled for delivery between 2024 and 2025Seven of these vessels have already joined the fleet this year.

The addition of dual-fuel vessels underscores Maersk’s commitment to achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2040Methanol, a lower-emission alternative to traditional bunker oil, has the potential to reduce GHG emissions by at least 65%, depending on production methods and feedstockMaersk continues to advocate for ambitious global regulations through the International Maritime Organization (IMO) to make lower-emission fuels competitive and close the price gap with conventional fossil fuels.

The launch of the A.P. Møller represents a significant step forward in decarbonizing the maritime industry while supporting global efforts to combat climate change.
