Petrobras Awards Contract for Four Support Vessels
Brazilian oil company Petrobras, through its logistics subsidiary Transpetro, has awarded a $69.5 million per vessel contract to local shipbuilders Ecovix and Mac Laren for the construction of four new coastal support vessels. The announcement marks a significant milestone in the revitalization of Brazil’s shipbuilding industry.

This contract, the first in a decade for domestic vessel procurement, aligns with Petrobras’ strategic fleet renewal plan. Transpetro CEO Sergio Bacci highlighted the importance of this development, stating, “This is a milestone for our management to resume ship acquisitions in Brazil after 10 years without contracting vessels to expand the fleet.”
The vessels, classified as ‘handy’ class, will boast a capacity of 15,000 to 18,000 deadweight tonnage (DWT). They represent the initial phase of Petrobras’ broader initiative to add 25 new ships to its fleet, with 16 already included in the company’s strategic plan for 2025–2029.
Looking ahead, Transpetro has announced plans for a second tender, scheduled for January 2024, to procure eight pressurized and semi-refrigerated gas tankers. This initiative underscores Petrobras’ commitment to enhancing its logistical and operational capabilities while fostering growth in Brazil’s maritime sector.
