The Port of Setúbal has made history by appearing for the first time in the Container Port Performance Index (CPPI), a ranking developed by the World Bank and S&P Global Market Intelligence. This index evaluates the efficiency of 405 ports worldwide, each with a minimum of 24 annual container ship calls.

In the 2023 performance results, the Port of Setúbal achieved the 333rd place in the Europe and North Africa regional ranking and the 351st position globally. Meanwhile, the Port of Lisbon has been recognized as the most efficient in the country, climbing 99 places from 2022 to rank 121st regionally and 135th globally.

Carlos Correia, President of the Administration of the Ports of Setúbal and Sesimbra (APSS) and the Administration of the Port of Lisbon (APL), emphasized the significant growth at the Setúbal port infrastructure. He credited this achievement to the collective efforts of the port communities, container terminal concessionaires, and workers. He highlighted the efficiency and effectiveness of operations by concessionaires Tersado and Sadoport, whose integrated services have boosted the attractiveness of the Port of Setúbal.

The Port of Setúbal’s entry into this prestigious ranking also underscores the excellence of its integrated offerings, particularly its intermodal capabilities. It is the second national port with the highest share of rail operations to and from the port, accounting for around 6,000 trains annually.

In the Europe and North Africa regional ranking, the Port of Sines is in 126th place and the Port of Leixões in 292nd place. Globally, Sines ranks 135th, just behind Lisbon, while Leixões stands at 290th.

The CPPI classifies global container ports based on efficiency, focusing on the duration of container ship stays at the port. The index, now in its fourth edition, utilized the largest data set ever: over 182,000 ships, 238.2 million movements, and 381 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) in the full calendar year of 2023.
