Schottel to Supply Propulsion Package for Italian Methanol Bunker Vessel

Posted by PartYard Marine

German equipment manufacturer Schottel has secured a contract to deliver a comprehensive propulsion package for a methanol bunker vessel currently being constructed at San Giorgio del Porto Shipyards in Italy.

The propulsion package will include two Schottel rudder propellers, type SRP 360, and a transverse thruster, type STT 1. The vessel, identified as the San Giorgio del Porto SG 116, will measure 91.3 meters in length and 15.7 meters in breadth, with a carrying capacity of 3,400 deadweight tonnage (dwt). The vessel’s owner, an Italian company based in Genoa, is known for its focus on new green technologies.

The propulsion system will incorporate two SRP 360 units in the embedded L-Drive variant, each with an input power of 1,200 kilowatts and a propeller diameter of 2.1 meters. The L-Drive variant features a compact electric motor embedded in the support structure of the thruster’s azimuth module, reducing the thruster’s overall height. This design allows the electric motors to occupy less space in the engine room, as it eliminates the need for a horizontal drive shaft. Additionally, the L-Drive’s elimination of an upper gearbox enhances the efficiency of power transmission from the motor to the propeller.

As an auxiliary propulsion system, the vessel will also be equipped with an STT 1 transverse thruster, boasting an input power of 400 kilowatts and a propeller diameter of 1.2 meters. These propulsion units will enable the vessel to achieve a maximum speed of 12.5 knots, according to Schottel.

The methanol bunker vessel’s construction is projected to be completed by 2025. Methanol is increasingly recognized as a crucial alternative fuel, and developing infrastructure for its transport and storage presents a global challenge. This project aims to ensure a reliable supply of this green fuel in the Mediterranean region.

Previously, in 2022, Schottel secured a contract to provide main and auxiliary propulsion systems for the first liquefied natural gas (LNG) bunkering vessel for the Italian shipping group Fratelli Cosulich.
