Setúbal Port Promotes Cruise Activity at Seatrade Cruise Global in Miami
Setúbal Port is making waves at the Seatrade Cruise Global event, currently underway until April 11th at the Miami Beach Convention Center in the United States. This annual gathering stands as the premier global event for the cruise industry, attracting over 600 exhibitors, approximately 80 cruise lines, and thousands of visitors from 120 countries.
Under the banner of “Cruise Portugal,” Setúbal Port joins forces with fellow Portuguese ports including Lisbon, Leixões, Portimão, Azores, and Madeira. Represented by António Caracol, a member of the Board of Directors of the Administration of the Ports of Setúbal and Sesimbra (APSS), Setúbal Port aims to carve its niche as a prime destination for small cruise ships traversing European routes.
The overarching theme of this year’s Seatrade Cruise Global, “The Evolution of Cruising,” provides an ideal platform for Setúbal Port to showcase its potential. With a strategic focus on accommodating smaller cruise vessels, the port envisions leveraging its position to foster regional development and forge synergies with various economic sectors such as tourism, maritime-tourism, fishing, and aquaculture.
António Caracol, representing APSS, underscores the rationale behind the port’s venture into the cruise industry, citing a burgeoning demand from operators and their keen interest in integrating Setúbal into their itineraries. He highlights past successful port calls in 2019 and 2021, with plans already in place for four cruise visits in 2024. Caracol predicts a swift trajectory towards a target of forty annual cruise ship visits in the coming years.
To complement its ambitions, APSS is finalizing plans for a modular support building dedicated to cruise activities. Situated in the port area adjacent to the Fishermen’s Dock, this facility’s design and specifications are being meticulously coordinated with operational control entities, including Customs, the National Republican Guard (GNR), and the Maritime Police.
Setúbal Port’s proactive stance at Seatrade Cruise Global underscores Portugal’s growing prominence as a cruise destination and signals promising prospects for the region’s maritime tourism sector. As the event unfolds in Miami, Setúbal Port emerges as a beacon of opportunity, poised to redefine the cruising experience for discerning travelers navigating Europe’s enchanting shores.
