Union Maritime to Equip 34 Newbuilds with Cutting-Edge Wind Propulsion Technology
Union Maritime, a leading UK-based chemical tanker owner and operator, has announced plans to outfit its fleet with state-of-the-art wind propulsion technology.
In a strategic partnership with BAR Technologies, the provider of WindWings, Union Maritime aims to revolutionize its operations. WindWings, an innovative rigid sail technology, is projected to deliver substantial fuel savings of 1.5 tonnes per wing daily, along with significant reductions in CO2 emissions across typical global routes.
The deployment of WindWings will encompass a total of 34 newbuild vessels within Union Maritime’s fleet, comprising 14 LR2s, 12 chemical tankers, and 8 MRs.
Driven by a commitment to exceed the greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction targets set by the International Maritime Organization, Union Maritime has set ambitious goals. By 2030, the company aims to achieve a 20% reduction in absolute emissions compared to 2008 levels. Additionally, it plans to source at least 5% of its energy needs from low- or zero-GHG sources by the same year.
With a fleet comprising over 70 vessels, including 52 tankers, 13 dry bulk carriers, and three offshore vessels, Union Maritime is a significant player in the maritime industry. The company has also placed orders for 35 newbuilds across various shipyards.
As it integrates this groundbreaking technology, Union Maritime is actively pursuing a substantial strategic equity investment in BAR Technologies.
In addition to its focus on wind propulsion, Union Maritime is advancing its environmental efforts through other initiatives. This includes the adoption of dual-fuel LNG engines on up to 8 LR2s, as well as collaboration with BAR Technologies on the development of the AeroBridge® superstructure, which promises enhanced efficiency and crew comfort.
This move underscores Union Maritime’s commitment to sustainability and innovation, positioning it at the forefront of green technology adoption in the maritime sector.
