Caterpillar Marine, based in Houston, has achieved a significant milestone as Norway’s classification society DNV granted an Approval in Principle (AiP) for its Cat 3500E methanol-ready marine main and auxiliary engines. This approval confirms the engines’ dual-fuel capabilities and readiness to operate on methanol, a key alternative fuel for maritime decarbonization.

The Cat 3500E engines, available in 12-cylinder (up to 1901 kW) and 16-cylinder (up to 2525 kW) configurations, are designed to cater to diverse maritime segments, especially for tugs and vessels requiring high-power propulsion for heavy loads. Caterpillar also plans to offer upgrade kits for the engines, enabling ship operators to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from well to wake.

“This approval from DNV marks a crucial development in our efforts to support the maritime industry’s energy transition,” stated Brad Johnson, Caterpillar Marine Vice President and General Manager. “We are committed to providing operators with high-quality methanol solutions, which are essential for a sustainable future.”

Caterpillar Marine began its journey into methanol engine technology in March 2022, announcing the methanol readiness of its 3500E series later that year. By April 2023, the company signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with global towage operator Svitzer, laying the groundwork for integrating methanol solutions into Svitzer’s fleet.

Further solidifying its position in alternative fuel technologies, Caterpillar partnered with Damen Shipyards Group in May 2024. Together, they plan to deploy the first field demonstrator methanol dual-fuel Cat 3500E engines by 2026, advancing the adoption of methanol-ready solutions in the maritime sector.
