Energy Observer’s EO2 Project Secures €40 Million to Advance Zero-Emission Cargo Ship Design

The European Union’s Innovation Fund has awarded €40 million (approximately $42 million) to Energy Observer for its groundbreaking hydrogen-powered containership project. Known as EO2, the vessel is set to become the world’s largest liquid hydrogen-powered cargo ship. Selected from 85 applications, the project aims to transform maritime shipping with zero-emission technology.

The EO2 is designed as a 160-meter (525-foot) ship capable of carrying 1,100 TEU. The initiative began in 2022 with the goal of creating a demonstration vessel that will set a new standard in reducing carbon emissions in cargo transportationEnergy Observer, which launched in 2017 with a self-sufficient laboratory vessel powered by solar, wind, and hydrogen energy, is now focusing its expertise on revolutionizing the maritime sector.

“This project represents an extraordinary challenge, taking laboratory research and applying it at a larger scale,” said Didier Boix, Managing Director of EO Concept. “With an onboard power capacity of 4.8 MW—comparable to managing 100 hydrogen-powered vehicles—we’re integrating advanced technologies, developing a liquid hydrogen port ecosystem, creating a digital twin of the vessel, and ensuring team readiness.”

The EO2 vessel will feature an electric propulsion system powered by hydrogen fuel cells. Its propulsion system includes 12 modules, each delivering 400 kW LH2, enabling a cruising speed of 12.5 knots and a maximum speed of 16 knots. The ship, weighing approximately 12,000 dwt, will operate with a crew of 18 and have a range of 1,600 nautical miles over 14 days. It is expected to cut CO2 emissions by 112,250 tons within its first 10 years of operation.

With an estimated total investment of over €100 million, the project will fund feasibility studies and constructionCommercial operations are projected to begin in 2029, with the vessel serving Europe’s Atlantic and Channel coasts.

The development of the EO2 has been a collaborative effort involving numerous partners, including ToyotaEODevCMA CGMAir LiquideBureau VeritasLMG Marin, and Dassault SystèmesChart Industries recently joined the consortium, contributing to feasibility studies and helping identify optimal technical and logistical solutions.

The initiative is also backed by Accor, a French hospitality company that provided initial seed funding. The EO2 project aims to prove the technical and economic viability of liquid hydrogen for maritime transport on short routes, solidifying Europe’s leadership in the clean energy transition.

With this funding, Energy Observer is poised to redefine sustainable maritime logistics, demonstrating that zero-emission solutions are not only possible but viable for the future of global trade.
