Curaçao Takes Significant Step Toward Sustainable Energy Future with Wärtsilä Battery Energy Storage System
Wärtsilä, a global technology group, will provide Curaçao with a 25 MW / 25 MWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) to expand renewable energy capacity and reduce carbon emissions. This development marks a crucial move towards a sustainable energy future for the Caribbean island. The order, placed by Aqualectra, Curaçao’s government-owned utilities company, is scheduled to be booked in Q2 2024.

The BESS, coupled with Wärtsilä’s GEMS Digital Energy Platform, aims to enhance grid stability and reliability, reducing the risks of brownouts and blackouts. This system will support Aqualectra’s vision for more renewable energy integration and will mitigate the intermittency issues associated with renewable sources.
Joseph Everon, Advisor to the CTO at Aqualectra, emphasized the strategic goal of providing affordable, sustainable, and reliable electricity to the community. He highlighted that the Wärtsilä solution aligns with these objectives by lowering generation costs, enabling renewable integration, and reducing CO2 emissions.
The detailed modeling of Curaçao’s power system played a key role in determining this solution. Christoffer Ek, Director of Decarbonisation Services at Wärtsilä Energy, noted that the BESS and GEMS platform would improve asset loading, efficiency, and grid stability.
Wärtsilä’s long-standing relationship with the Caribbean region and specifically with Aqualectra is further strengthened by this project. The equipment is set for delivery in Q1 2025, with the project expected to be fully operational by the end of Q2 2025.
