Wärtsilä Secures Key Contract for LNG Bunkering Vessel Systems
Wärtsilä Gas Solutions, a division of Finland’s technology leader Wärtsilä, has signed a major contract to deliver cargo handling and fuel gas supply systems for a 12,500 cbm liquefied natural gas (LNG) bunkering vessel. The vessel is being constructed by China’s Nantong CIMC Sinopacific Offshore & Engineering shipyard (CIMC SOE) for global energy giant Vitol.
This latest order, booked in Q4 2024, is seen as a significant milestone for Wärtsilä as it continues to strengthen its position in the small-scale LNG application market. Richie Zhu, Sales Manager at Wärtsilä Gas Solutions in China, highlighted the importance of LNG as a sustainable marine fuel, stating that it is becoming the preferred choice for operators aiming for greener solutions.
“The market for LNG bunkering vessels is expanding rapidly,” Zhu noted, “and we have established a leading position in delivering modern systems that optimize cargo handling efficiency for these vessels.”
The vessel is part of a two-ship order placed by Vitol in mid-2024. Along with its 20,000 cbm sister vessel, the ships are scheduled for delivery in Q4 2026 and Q3 2027, respectively.
Wärtsilä’s collaboration with CIMC SOE builds on a long-standing partnership that has seen the delivery of cargo handling systems for various LNG, liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), ethane/ethylene, and multi-gas carriers.
In October 2023, CIMC SOE delivered the 8,200 cbm LNG bunkering vessel Alice Cosulich, equipped with Wärtsilä’s dual-fuel technology, to Italian shipowner Fratelli Cosulich. Shortly after, Wärtsilä secured another major contract to supply cargo handling and fuel systems for four 40,000 cbm gas carriers being built by CIMC SOE for Norway’s Avance Gas.
This latest deal reinforces Wärtsilä’s leadership in supporting the growing global demand for LNG bunkering infrastructure.
