The Wuchang Shipbuilding Industry Group has awarded SCHOTTEL the contract for a comprehensive propulsion system for four state-of-the-art Offshore Construction Vessels (OCVs). These 100-meter-long vessels, designed by Norway’s Salt Ship Design under the Salt 308 OCV model, are engineered for challenging offshore operations at depths of up to 3,000 meters in complex sea conditions. The vessels will serve both traditional oil and gas operations, as well as the expanding renewable energy sector, including offshore wind farms.

The customer, an undisclosed first-class European owner, will utilize these vessels to meet the growing demand for robust construction capabilities in these energy sectors. The first vessel is expected to be delivered in late 2026.

Advanced Propulsion Package

The propulsion system is designed to ensure precise dynamic positioning and maneuverability, crucial for offshore operations in heavy-duty conditions. Each vessel will be equipped with five SCHOTTEL thrusters, combining the latest technology for optimal performance.

“We are honored to supply our propulsion solutions for this fleet of advanced OCVs,” said Roland Schwandt, Deputy CEO of SCHOTTEL. “This propulsion package will provide the operator with the best available technology for dynamic positioning, critical in the offshore sector.”

Key Propulsion Systems:

  1. 2x SCHOTTEL Dynamic RudderPropellers (SRP 610 DL):
These rudder propellers offer high acceleration/deceleration, along with a fast azimuth steering system. With a compact design and embedded prime mover, they feature an eight-degree tilted propeller shaft to reduce interaction with the hull, enhancing efficiency.
  2. 1x SCHOTTEL Retractable RudderPropeller (SRP-R 380 L):
Installed in the bow, this retractable thruster will further augment propulsion. Similar to the SRP-D, it is driven by an electric prime mover and features a tilted propeller shaft for improved performance.
  3. 2x SCHOTTEL TransverseThrusters (STT 6):
Additional bow thrusters offer enhanced maneuverability during dynamic positioning. The elastic mounting of these transverse thrusters will also improve crew comfort by reducing onboard noise and vibrations.

Cutting-Edge Design

The Salt 308 OCVs will have a beam of 23 meters, a draught of 6.5 meters, and a 1,150-square-meter deck area. They will also be prepared for operation on alternative fuels, underscoring the industry’s shift toward sustainability in marine operations.

As these vessels are set to serve the demanding offshore market, the combination of innovative design and advanced propulsion solutions places them at the forefront of technological development in both traditional and renewable energy sectors.

This partnership between Wuchang Shipbuilding and SCHOTTEL marks another step forward in offshore construction capabilities, reinforcing their commitment to supporting the future of global energy exploration.
