Dalian Shipbuilding Industry (DSIC), a subsidiary of China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC), has delivered the first 16,000 TEU LNG dual-fuel containership ordered by Minsheng Financial Leasing (MSFL) for the Swiss shipping giant Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC).

The vessel, named MSC Viola, was handed over an impressive 172 days ahead of schedule on January 9, 2025, at DSIC’s Tianjin shipyard. Construction of the containership commenced on May 15, 2023.

MSC Viola boasts a length of 366 meters, a molded width of 51 meters, and a molded depth of 30.2 meters, with the capacity to carry 16,196 standard containers. The vessel is equipped with cutting-edge technologies, including the iCER-diesel green energy-saving system, a low-pressure SCR system for its auxiliary generator, and a dual-fuel supply system for its main engine, auxiliary generator set, and boiler. This enables the ship to burn low-sulfur fuel oil or LNG gas fuel, ensuring compliance with stringent sulfur oxide and nitrogen oxide Tier III emission standards.

The ship also features innovative energy-saving technologies, such as an air lubrication drag reduction system, a shaft generator, and an energy-saving guide wheel positioned in front of the propeller. Its B-type LNG fuel tank, designed and built by DSIC, showcases the shipbuilder’s independent intellectual property rights.

This delivery follows DSIC’s recent handover of the 16,000 TEU MSC Maria Cristina in October 2024, which featured a 13,000 cbm LNG fuel tank, the largest of its kind in the world. Another vessel from the same series, MSC Carmela, was delivered to MSC on January 8, 2025.

In 2024, MSC placed multiple orders for dual-fuel containerships in China, investing billions of dollars to advance fleet decarbonization, replace aging vessels, and maintain its global position. The most recent order, made in December 2024, includes ten 24,000 TEU LNG-powered units from Hengli Heavy Industries in Dalian, China, reinforcing MSC’s commitment to sustainable shipping.
