Wärtsilä, a prominent technology group, has clinched a significant contract to supply engines for the upcoming Canadian Coast Guard Polar Icebreaker. This state-of-the-art vessel is under construction at Seaspan Vancouver Shipyards and is poised to become the centerpiece of the Canadian Coast Guard’s icebreaking fleet.

The selection of Wärtsilä engines stems from the critical requirement for extended operational range, especially in navigating the challenging Arctic waters, where fuel efficiency is paramount. The renowned Wärtsilä 31 engine was a natural choice, having earned recognition from the Guinness World Records as the most efficient 4-stroke diesel engine globally. This accolade solidified its position as the engine of choice for this prestigious project, with the order being confirmed by Wärtsilä in the third quarter of 2023.

The 158-meter-long multi-mission Polar Icebreaker will operate under PC2 conditions and will be powered by a combination of four 16-cylinder and two 8-cylinder Wärtsilä 31 engines, boasting a remarkable 47 MW of power. To ensure compliance with IMO Tier III environmental standards, the engines will be equipped with Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) systems. Additionally, Wärtsilä will supply the vessel with a centre shaft line featuring a stainless-steel ice-class propeller, along with the renowned NACOS Platinum navigation system.

Leo Martin, Senior Vice President – Programs at Seaspan Shipyards, praised Wärtsilä for their proven track record and expertise in delivering cutting-edge marine technologies. This sentiment was echoed by Simon Riddle, General Manager, Naval Sales at Wärtsilä, who emphasized the significance of the Wärtsilä 31 engine’s fuel efficiency in securing this prestigious contract.

The delivery of Wärtsilä equipment to the yard is scheduled for 2025, marking a crucial milestone in the construction of the Canadian Coast Guard’s largest icebreaker. This groundbreaking vessel will replace the venerable ‘CCGS Louis S. St-Laurent’, which is set to retire after six decades of service by the end of the decade. With Seaspan Shipyards renowned for its expertise in building high-technology ice-class vessels, anticipation runs high for the completion of this flagship Polar Icebreaker.
