Bureau Veritas Marine & Offshore (BV) has successfully delivered the CMA CGM TIGA, the final vessel in a series of ten 5,500 TEU container ships constructed for CMA CGM by CSSC Qingdao Beihai Shipbuilding. This milestone marks the culmination of a major project in which BV provided classification services, while Bureau Veritas Solutions M&O (BVS) offered advisory support to ensure compliance with international standards in safety, structural integrity, and environmental protection.

The CMA CGM TIGA is a next-generation, medium-sized container ship, measuring 255.5 meters in length and 40 meters in width, with a deadweight tonnage of over 73,000 tons. Designed by CSSC Qingdao Beihai Shipbuilding in collaboration with SDARI (Shanghai Ship Research & Design Institute), the vessel integrates several advanced technologies, including the world’s first WinGD7X82-2.0 main engine, as well as Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) and Alternate Maritime Power (AMP) systems to significantly reduce SOx and NOx emissions.

BV supported the project from design to completion, working closely with CMA CGM, CSTC (China Shipbuilding Trading Co., Ltd.), and the engine manufacturer to ensure full compliance with BV classification rules, statutory requirements, and construction survey services.

BVS played a key role in enhancing the energy efficiency and performance of each vessel in the series. The ships achieved an EEDI rating 53.6% below the IMO baseline, outperforming IMO Phase III environmental targets. Advisory services included springing vibration analysis using a global finite element model, contributing to reduced design cycles and optimized structural integrity, while also supporting timely steel procurement.

In addition, BV conducted comprehensive precision monitoring throughout construction, ensuring the vessels passed container hold tests and met strict hull welding quality standards. Enhanced safety features such as the Fuel Oil Rapid Recovery System (FORS) and a low-voltage refrigerated container insulation fault alarm and positioning system were also integrated. The FORS notation allows for rapid fuel recovery in emergencies, while shaft alignment calculations accounted for elastic deformation in the large hull structure, helping to prevent wear on the propeller shaft and bearings.

With the delivery of CMA CGM TIGA, Bureau Veritas closes an important chapter in advancing sustainable and safe maritime transport.
