Dominion Energy, a leading Virginia-based energy company, has proudly announced the successful launch of the Charybdis, the first U.S.-built and Jones Act-compliant offshore wind turbine installation vessel. The vessel, measuring an impressive 472 feet, is currently under construction at the Seatrium AmFELS shipyard in Brownsville, Texas, utilizing domestically-sourced steel.

Upon completion, the Charybdis will be stationed in Hampton Roads, Virginia, to facilitate the construction of Dominion’s groundbreaking Coastal Virginia Offshore Wind (CVOW) project. According to Bob Blue, Dominion Energy’s CEO, the Charybdis is not only crucial for the CVOW project but also for fostering the growth of the offshore wind industry along the U.S. East Coast and nurturing a domestic supply chain.

The vessel’s construction involved over 14,000 tons of domestic steel, with nearly 10,000 tons sourced from states including Alabama, West Virginia, and North Carolina. Designed to accommodate turbines of 12 megawatts or larger, the Charybdis marks a significant milestone in the nation’s shift towards renewable energy.

Chris Ong, CEO of Seatrium, expressed pride in the partnership with Dominion Energy, emphasizing the vessel’s compliance with the Jones Act and its role in advancing the country’s energy transition. The U.S.-built vessel promises to not only deliver reliable, affordable, and clean energy but also foster local expertise and employment opportunities within coastal communities.

The Coastal Virginia Offshore Wind project, boasting a capacity of 2.6 gigawatts, has secured federal approval as the largest offshore wind project to date. Situated approximately 27 miles off Virginia Beach, the project aims to install up to 176 wind turbine generators, each boasting a capacity of 14.7 megawatts.

With the final federal permit from the Environmental Protection Agency in hand, Dominion Energy anticipates commencing offshore construction soon. The offshore monopile installation phase is slated to commence in May, marking a significant step forward in America’s renewable energy journey.
