INEOS has confirmed the launch and christening of Europe’s first built CO₂ carrier on May 14, 2025, marking a major milestone for the Greensand carbon capture and storage (CCS) project.

The vessel, currently under construction at the Royal Niestern Sander shipyard in the Netherlands, has completed all major hull assembly work and is now entering the next construction phase, which includes retrofitting, commissioning, testing, and sea trials.

Specifically designed for liquefied CO₂ transport, the carrier will play a central role in the EU’s first full-scale CCS value chain, moving captured CO₂ from onshore sites to offshore storage at the Nini West platform in the Danish North Sea. There, the CO₂ will be injected into the Nini reservoir, located approximately 1,800 meters below the seabed, for safe and permanent storage.

The vessel is being built under a 2024 agreement between INEOS and Wagenborg, with construction led by Royal Niestern Sander. The ship features advanced cooling and pressure systems to meet the specific demands of CO₂ transport, while also complying with the highest safety and environmental standards.

“The completion of all sections of the CO₂ vessel is a giant step forward for the transportation of CO₂ in the EU,” said Mads Gade, CEO of INEOS Energy Europe. “This ship is essential to our ambition of establishing the first full-scale CO₂ storage facility in the EU.”

Edwin de Vries, Director of Wagenborg Offshore, added: “We are proud to reach this milestone with INEOS for Project Greensand. This is the first vessel of its kind built in the EU, showcasing how the maritime industry in the North of the Netherlands can contribute to the energy transition.”

Project Greensand Moving Ahead

The carrier’s progress comes after the Final Investment Decision (FID) made in December 2024 by INEOS and its partners Harbour Energy and Nordsøfonden to launch full-scale operations in the Nini Field.

With plans to begin CO₂ injection by late 2025 or early 2026, Project Greensand is on track to become Europe’s first operational CO₂ storage facility. The project’s first phase aims to store 400,000 tonnes of CO₂ annually, with a roadmap to scale up to 8 million tonnes per year by 2030.

More than $150 million is expected to be invested across the Greensand CCS value chain, with the new carrier enabling safe, efficient, and scalable CO₂ transport from sites across Europe to Denmark’s offshore storage.
