Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) has made history as the first shipping line to introduce ultra-large container vessels with a capacity of 24,000 TEU on the African continent. The MSC DILETTA and MSC TÜRKIYE have been added to the Africa Express service, which connects ports in China and South Korea with destinations in Southeast Asia and West Africa, including Ghana, Togo, Côte d’Ivoire, and Cameroon.

This deployment marks a major shift in regional trade dynamics, reflecting significant improvements in West African port infrastructure. The MSC DILETTA made its first call in Lomé, Togo, on 23 April, becoming the largest containership to serve the region so far.

The decision to deploy these 24,000 TEU vessels is driven by three main factors:

  • Rising Asia–West Africa trade volumes: As trade between the two regions grows rapidly, MSC is leveraging larger vessels to move more cargo efficiently.

  • Increased customer demand: Shippers along this corridor are seeking greater capacity and logistical efficiency.

  • Strategic infrastructure investment: The move reflects MSC’s commitment to strengthening maritime infrastructure and connectivity in West Africa, potentially driving economic development across the region.

This strategic step underscores MSC’s role in shaping the future of maritime trade in West Africa, aligning with broader efforts to enhance the region’s position in global logistics.
