SCHOTTEL is set to deliver its advanced hybrid propulsion systems to the world’s first purpose-built dual-fuel methanol escort tugs, developed by KOTUG Canada. These cutting-edge vessels, based on the Robert Allan Ltd. RASalvor 4400-DFM design, are under construction at Sanmar Shipyards in Turkey and are expected to be completed by Q3 2025.

The vessels, named SD Aisemaht and SD Qwiy Aanitsa Sarah, will play a critical role in the Trans Mountain Expansion Project (TMEP), providing escort services for crude oil tankers traveling through the Salish Sea, from the Port of Vancouver to the Pacific Ocean.

“These tugs, propelled by modern climate-friendly SCHOTTEL systems, represent a step forward for environmental performance in the British Columbia tug market,” said Laurens Korporaal, Business Development Manager at KOTUG Canada.

Unmatched Power and Maneuverability

Each tug will be equipped with two SCHOTTEL RudderPropellers type SRP 710, offering 360-degree steerability, high propulsion efficiency, and exceptional manoeuvring capabilities. They will also feature SCHOTTEL TransverseThrusters type STT 170, enabling free sailing speeds of up to 14 knots and delivering an impressive bollard pull of over 120 tonnes—making them the most powerful escort tugs in Canada.

Environmental Innovations: Hybrid Drives and Graphene Coating

In line with strict environmental standards and the expectations of Salish Sea communities including the Sc’ianew First Nation, the tugs integrate SCHOTTEL’s SYDRIVE-M—a mechanical hybrid solution that allows both thrusters to be powered by a single main engine. This reduces fuel consumption, minimizes emissions, and lowers maintenance costs, all without the need for additional electrical components.

Additionally, the hulls are coated with a graphene-based paint that combats biofouling, improves hull smoothness, and further reduces underwater radiated noise, contributing to quieter and more fuel-efficient operations.

About the TMEP

The Trans Mountain Expansion Project is a major upgrade to a 1,180-kilometre pipeline, increasing its capacity to 890,000 barrels per day. The project significantly boosts oil export capacity from Edmonton, Alberta, to the British Columbia coast, specifically at Westridge Terminals in Burnaby.
