SCHOTTEL RudderPropellers Chosen for LDA’s Next-Gen SOVs for Vattenfall

Louis Dreyfus Armateurs (LDA), a leading French maritime services provider, has selected SCHOTTEL to supply eight DP-optimized RudderPropellers Dynamic (SRP-D) for two next-generation Service Operation Vessels (SOVs) commissioned by Vattenfall, a major European energy company.
Designed by SALT Ship Design in Norway and to be constructed at Shanghai Zhenhua Heavy Industries Co. Ltd. (ZPMC) in China, the vessels will be equipped with four identical SCHOTTEL SRP 430 D units each. With an input power of 1,660 kW per unit, the SRP-D ensures precise dynamic positioning essential for offshore operations.
“This setup ensures optimal DP performance and reflects our trust in the reliability of SCHOTTEL systems,” said Arthur Barret, Head of Engineering, Projects and Innovation at LDA.
The SRP-D stands out for its fast azimuth steering, improved thrust allocation, and compact design featuring a vertically integrated electric drive motor (LE-Drive) and an eight-degree inclined propeller shaft. These enhancements contribute to higher positioning accuracy, lower thrust losses, and greater energy efficiency.
Since its launch in 2023, the SRP-D has seen strong market adoption, with over 50 units sold. Designed specifically for demanding offshore applications, the thrusters are built to maintain vessel position even in harsh weather conditions, extending the operational window and promoting fuel savings.
The new vessels build upon the success of LDA’s earlier “Wind of Change” and “Wind of Hope”, both of which also featured complete SCHOTTEL propulsion systems. Upgrades in this new series focus on maximizing efficiency, uptime, and energy optimization, and will include an advanced gangway system and 3D motion-compensated crane.
Scheduled for launch in 2027, the first SOV will operate on the DanTysk and Sandbank offshore wind farms in Germany, while the second will support the Nordlicht 1 and Nordlicht 2 projects. An optional third vessel is planned for future Vattenfall operations in the North Sea.
