TotalEnergies-Chartered Tanker Cuts Fuel Use by Up to 21% with Wind Propulsion and Weather Routing
Syroco Releases Data on Alcyone’s Fuel Efficiency Gains
French software provider Syroco has shared performance data from the deployment of wind propulsion and weather optimization technology on the TotalEnergies-chartered tanker Alcyone.
The 183-meter-long Alcyone, owned by Socatra, was equipped with two rotor sails from Norsepower in early 2024. The vessel operates on transpacific routes and benefits from Syroco’s digital platform, which optimizes routing based on weather conditions to maximize wind propulsion efficiency.
Key Performance Results
- Wind assistance reduced fuel consumption by 4% to 18%.
- Syroco’s weather routing added reductions of 3% to 18%.
- Combining both technologies achieved fuel savings of up to 21%.
- The vessel saved approximately 50 tons of fuel monthly, equating to 1,800 tons of CO2 emissions avoided annually.

Syroco’s digital twin technology and simulation capabilities empower crews to amplify propulsion efficiency by leveraging favorable weather conditions.

The reported results are based on data collected over 9 voyages conducted between May and October 2024, reinforcing the effectiveness of wind-assisted propulsion and weather optimization technologies in achieving significant environmental benefits.
