Maersk to Develop Green Ship Recycling Facility in Egypt
Maersk has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in Egypt to explore the development of a sustainable ship recycling facility. This initiative aligns with Egypt’s strategy to reduce its dependence on imported scrap metal while advancing environmentally responsible practices.

The planned ship demolition yard will be established at Damietta Port, located west of Port Said on the Mediterranean Sea. It will be designed in compliance with the Hong Kong Convention, ensuring improved conditions for ship recycling. The facility will span approximately 155,000 square meters and will accommodate vessels up to 230 meters in length. Additionally, discussions are underway for the development of other ship recycling sites in Egypt.
Maersk has a longstanding history of supporting sustainable ship recycling. When it acquired P&O Nedlloyd two decades ago, it played a crucial role in developing what was then China’s leading ship recycling yard.
This latest project reinforces Maersk’s commitment to fostering greener maritime solutions while contributing to Egypt’s growing ship recycling industry.
