Google has announced a landmark Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP) for 250 MW of energy from the Zeevonk offshore wind project in the Netherlands. This agreement reflects Google’s ongoing commitment to achieving 24/7 Carbon-Free Energy (CFE) for its operations by 2030.

Zeevonk: A Game-Changer in Renewable Energy

The Zeevonk project, a joint venture between Vattenfall and CIP, is designed to integrate offshore wind, floating solar, and green hydrogen at a significant scale. Google’s agreement ensures that its Dutch operations will be powered by carbon-free energy for the next 15 years.

“Google partnered with CIP ahead of the government tender for this subsidy-free, GW-scale project. We are proud of the outcome and close collaboration with CIP,” said Adam Elman, Director of Sustainability EMEA at Google. “The partnership brings new carbon-free energy to the Dutch grid and powers our operations, including digital tools and artificial intelligence services used worldwide.”

Innovative Energy Solutions at IJmuiden Ver Beta

A central part of the Zeevonk initiative is the IJmuiden Ver Beta project, comprising a 2 GW offshore wind farm and a 50 MW floating solar farm, located 62 kilometers off the west coast of the Netherlands. The floating solar farm will have ten times the capacity of the earlier project at Hollandse Kust West Site VII.

A significant share of the electricity generated will be converted into green hydrogen at a 1 GW electrolyzer plant near Rotterdam Port. By locating the electrolyzer close to the wind farm’s connection point, the need to use the national power grid is minimized, reducing grid pressure.

Milestone for Subsidy-Free Renewables

The subsidy-free Zeevonk project, expected to be operational by 2029, represents a significant leap forward in renewable energy integration. With this PPA, Google reinforces its leadership in sustainable innovation while supporting the development of cutting-edge solutions in carbon-free energy.

This collaboration not only benefits Google’s operations but also strengthens the Netherlands’ position as a global hub for renewable energy innovation.
