Hapag-Lloyd Orders LNG Dual-Fuel Containership Fleet

Hapag-Lloyd, the Germany-based container shipping giant, has placed orders for up to thirty LNG dual-fuel container vessels in China as part of its fleet expansion efforts.
Following a pause in newbuilding orders, Hapag-Lloyd has ordered ten firm plus five optional 17,000 TEU units from Yangzijiang Shipbuilding, with each vessel costing $210 million. The new ships will feature LNG dual-fuel systems and have a 1.6k reefer capacity.
Additionally, the Hamburg-based carrier has contracted New Times Shipbuilding, another Chinese shipbuilder, for ten firm plus five optional 9,200 TEU vessels, priced at $140 million per unit.
Ranked as the world’s fifth largest container shipping carrier, according to Alphaliner’s TOP 100 list, Hapag-Lloyd introduced several LNG-powered ultra-large container vessels (ULCVs) to its fleet in 2024. These eco-friendly ships, among the largest to ever sail under the German flag, are equipped with advanced LNG dual-fuel engines and energy-efficient designs.
The new vessels are part of Hapag-Lloyd’s broader initiative to operate its entire fleet in a climate-neutral manner by 2045. Beyond LNG, the company is preparing for a multi-fuel future, exploring methanol and potentially ammonia as alternative fuels. In the coming years, the company plans to implement alternative fuel retrofits, order additional new ships, and continue to enhance its fleet’s energy efficiency.
Earlier in 2024, Hapag-Lloyd entered into a partnership with Seaspan Corporation, a Hong Kong-based containership owner, to retrofit and convert five 10,100 TEU vessels from conventional S90 engines to dual-fuel engines capable of running on methanol. After retrofitting, the ships will remain on long-term charter from Seaspan to Hapag-Lloyd.
