Maersk Bets on Bio-LNG with Major Newbuilding Orders
A.P. Moller – Maersk (Maersk) is advancing its commitment to sustainable shipping by signing newbuilding orders and time-charter contracts for LNG dual-fuel container vessels. The company plans to order 50-60 new ships, aligning with its fleet renewal goal of around 160,000 TEU per year.
These new orders are part of Maersk’s ongoing fleet renewal program, which began in 2021. So far, the program has included orders for 25 methanol dual-fuel vessels—five already in service and 20 on order—providing about 350,000 TEU of dual-fuel capacity.
The exact propulsion technology mix for these new vessels will depend on future regulations and the availability of green fuels. To support its new dual-fuel gas vessels, Maersk has started securing offtake agreements for bio-LNG. This move is expected to contribute to greenhouse gas emissions reductions within this decade.
Maersk’s diverse approach to propulsion, combining methanol and LNG dual-fuel technologies, is designed to maintain the fleet’s competitiveness and support the company’s decarbonization goals. While green methanol is projected to be the most scalable option in the short term, Maersk envisions a multi-fuel future that includes liquified bio-methane.
Upon delivery, approximately 25% of Maersk’s fleet will feature dual-fuel engines. “Our fleet renewal program is fundamental to maintaining our competitive edge in ocean shipping and is key to decarbonizing our operations,” said Rabab Boulos, Chief Operating Officer at Maersk. With shipyard orderbooks filling up and delivery times extending, Maersk has committed to ordering and chartering 800,000 TEU of dual-fuel vessels for 2026-2030. This strategy ensures a steady capacity flow while maintaining financial and operational flexibility. About 300,000 TEU will be owned by Maersk, with the remaining 500,000 TEU secured through time-charter agreements.
The ordered vessels will vary in size to provide network flexibility. These orders won’t expand Maersk’s overall capacity, as each new ship will replace an older vessel reaching the end of its service life, keeping the total fleet size at approximately 4.3 million TEU.
“By diversifying our fleet and fuel options, we gain the flexibility, knowledge, and experience to cater to a future with multiple fuel paths,” said Ahmed Hassan, Head of Asset Strategy & Strategic Partnerships at Maersk.
