A.P. Moller – Maersk has completed agreements with three shipyards to construct 20 advanced dual-fuel container vessels, marking a major milestone in the company’s fleet renewal strategy. These vessels, with a combined capacity of 300,000 TEU (Twenty-foot Equivalent Units), were part of the fleet expansion plan announced in August 2024.

Anda Cristescu, Head of Chartering & Newbuilding at Maersk, expressed satisfaction with the agreements:

“We are pleased to have signed agreements for 20 vessels and thereby completed the acquisition of 300,000 TEU capacity as announced in August. These orders are a part of our ongoing fleet renewal program and align with our commitment to decarbonization, as all the vessels will operate on lower-emissions fuel.”

The new vessels, featuring liquefied gas dual-fuel propulsion systems, will range in size from 9,000 to 17,000 TEU, providing operational flexibility to meet varied deployment needs. Cristescu added:

“Once phased in, they will replace existing capacity in our fleet.”

Delivery Timeline
The first vessels are expected to be delivered in 2028, with the final vessel arriving by 2030.

Key Highlights:

  • 20 dual-fuel vessels with a total capacity of 300,000 TEU.
  • 2 vessels of 9,000 TEU from Yangzijiang Shipbuilding, China.
  • 12 vessels of 15,000 TEU (6 from Hanwha Ocean, South Korea, and 6 from New Times Shipbuilding, China).
  • 6 vessels of 17,000 TEU from Yangzijiang Shipbuilding, China.

These vessels will contribute to Maersk’s commitment to sustainability by operating on low-emission fuels, aligning with its broader decarbonization goals.

This order complements Maersk’s August fleet update, which included plans to charter methanol and liquefied gas dual-fuel vessels with a total capacity of 500,000 TEU, also intended to replace older capacity within the fleet.

With this investment, Maersk reaffirms its leadership in innovation and sustainability within the maritime industry.
