MSC Places Order for Eight LNG Dual-Fuel Containerships at Zhoushan Changhong Shipyard
Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) has signed a contract with Zhoushan Changhong International Shipyard in China for the construction of up to eight LNG dual-fuel containerships. The deal includes an initial order for four vessels, with options for two additional pairs.

These 22,000 TEU ships, measuring 366 meters in length, 61.3 meters in beam, and 33.2 meters in depth, will be the largest and most advanced built by Zhoushan Changhong to date. The project is also the biggest shipbuilding endeavor currently underway in Zhejiang Province.
This marks the second collaboration between MSC and Zhoushan Changhong, following previous orders for ten 11,500 TEU, ten 10,300 TEU, and twelve 19,000 TEU LNG dual-fuel containerships. The design for these new vessels was developed by CIMC Ocean Engineering Design & Research Institute (CIMC ORIC).
In December 2024, MSC also ordered ten 24,000 TEU LNG dual-fuel containerships from Hengli Heavy Industries in Dalian, China. These investments align with MSC’s strategy to modernize its fleet, comply with upcoming environmental regulations, and replace aging vessels.
Currently, MSC operates a fleet of 888 ships, with 595 owned and 293 chartered, alongside an additional 129 vessels on order.
