SCHOTTEL de Colombia: State-of-the-Art Thruster Workshop Set to Transform LATAM Market

SCHOTTEL de Colombia is set to redefine propulsion system support across Latin America with the construction of a state-of-the-art thruster workshop in Cartagena. Strategically located near the Caribbean Sea, this facility will be the only specialized maintenance and repair workshop in Colombia offered by a propulsion system manufacturer. Backed by a €5 million investment (approximately $5.5 million USD), the new workshop underscores SCHOTTEL’s commitment to enhancing its regional service capabilities and strengthening its presence in this growing market.
Strategic Expansion to Enhance Customer Service
Stefan Kaul, CEO of SCHOTTEL GmbH, emphasized the strategic importance of this investment:
“This expansion allows us to be closer to our LATAM customers, offer enhanced on-site services, and unlock the untapped potential of this market. General Manager Julio Carrasquilla and his team have done an excellent job laying the groundwork for this project, and we are excited to take our operations to the next level.”
Addressing a Critical Market Gap
Julio Carrasquilla, General Manager of SCHOTTEL de Colombia, explained the transformative potential of the workshop:
“With this new facility, we will fill a significant gap in propulsion system service offerings across LATAM, raising the standard of customer support. Its strategic location near major shipyards will enable us to provide quicker and more efficient maintenance services, significantly reducing fleet downtime and improving operational efficiency for our customers.”
Equipped with Cutting-Edge Technology
The 1,000-square-metre workshop, situated on a 4,700-square-metre site, will be outfitted with advanced tools and features designed to meet the most demanding requirements of the marine industry:
- Dual overhead cranes with a 60-tonne capacity for heavy propulsion systems.
- 3D scanning technology for precise evaluation of complex parts.
- Machining areas equipped for turning, milling, and grinding.
- Vertical assembly capacity of up to 12 metres for larger propulsion units.
- A 100-square-metre spare parts warehouse, an automatic gearbox handler, and an automatic parts cleaner for efficient operations.
The facility also incorporates specialized features, such as an ergonomically designed assembly pit for subcomponents and advanced oil trapping systems, ensuring an optimal working environment for complex repairs.
Adjacent to the workshop, a modern 800-square-metre office building will accommodate up to 37 employees, including a dedicated training room to support staff development and knowledge-sharing initiatives.
Designed for Sustainability
The workshop and office building are designed with sustainability at their core, aligning with SCHOTTEL’s commitment to environmental stewardship. Highlights include:
- A 138 kW photovoltaic system that will fully power the facility and generate 60 kW of excess energy to contribute to the public grid.
- Measures to reduce energy use, optimize resource efficiency, minimize waste, and lower transport-related emissions.
Strengthening Service for Latin America
Set to open in July 2025, this workshop represents a major milestone in SCHOTTEL’s mission to deliver OEM-level maintenance and superior customer support across 18 Spanish-speaking countries in the region. It will enable the company to handle multiple projects simultaneously, significantly enhancing its responsiveness and capacity to meet customer needs.
