SCHOTTEL to Supply Components for 27 Waterways Commerce Cutters in U.S. Coast Guard Program

SCHOTTEL Rudder Propellers Chosen for U.S. Waterways Commerce Cutter Fleet Modernization
SCHOTTEL has been selected by Birdon America, Inc. to supply SRP 210 rudder propellers for 27 vessels under the U.S. Coast Guard Waterways Commerce Cutter (WCC) Program. As the prime contractor, Birdon America, Inc. will design and construct 16 River Buoy Tenders (WLR) and 11 Inland Construction Tenders (WLIC) at its Bayou La Batre shipyard in Alabama. With up to four cutters delivered annually over the next eight years, these vessels will replace the aging U.S. Coast Guard fleet.
Features of SCHOTTEL Rudder Propellers
Each SRP 210 rudder propeller provides 597 kW (800 hp) with a 1.3-meter propeller diameter. The units feature the highly efficient SDC40 nozzle, ensuring compact design and high propulsion efficiency. For added safety, hydrodynamically optimized protective grids shield the propellers from debris.
The propulsion system includes SCHOTTEL DuroVario-S slipping clutches, which improve startup smoothness, handling, and maneuverability while minimizing the environmental impact during berthing operations. These thrusters will enable the vessels to achieve speeds of 11 knots or more, supporting operations in both deep and shallow waters.
Advanced Environmental Protection and Monitoring
The propulsion systems will be equipped with SCHOTTEL LeaCon, a DNV-certified sealing system designed to prevent contamination between river and seawater and operational materials. The LeaCon system utilizes an intermediate chamber design with multiple seals, continuously monitored via an alarm unit, and complies with VGP regulations.
Additionally, the vessels will feature SCHOTTEL’s MariHub condition monitoring system, which enables condition-based maintenance and displays key system data onboard for efficient operations.
Modernizing the U.S. Waterways Transportation System
The Waterways Commerce Cutters play a critical role in maintaining the U.S. inland waterways, which facilitate the movement of approximately 630 million tons of cargo annually. The current fleet, with an average age of 57 years, is nearing obsolescence. The new vessels will offer improved habitability and accommodate mixed-gender crews. The first cutter is expected to be operational by 2027.
