SCHOTTEL has been selected to supply a complete propulsion package for the Polish Navy’s new rescue vessel Ratownik, currently under construction at PGZ Stocznia Wojenna. The vessel is being built to replace the Navy’s existing rescue units and will significantly enhance Poland’s submarine rescue capabilities, while also reinforcing the protection of subsea infrastructure in the Baltic Sea. Launch of the vessel is planned for 2027, with delivery scheduled for 2029.

Designed for complex and demanding missions, Ratownik will rely on SCHOTTEL’s propulsion technology to ensure precise manoeuvrability and reliable performance in challenging operating conditions. According to Marcin Ryngwelski, CEO of PGZ Stocznia Wojenna, the propulsion package plays a critical role in the vessel’s operational capability.

“We are focused on equipping Ratownik with solutions that guarantee dependable performance in the demanding conditions of the Baltic Sea,” said Ryngwelski. “SCHOTTEL’s propulsion package is essential for accurate manoeuvring during submarine rescue operations and dynamic positioning missions. Our goal is to deliver a vessel that fully meets the Polish Navy’s operational needs using proven and reliable technology.”

Propulsion tailored for precision and safety

To support advanced dynamic positioning during diving and rescue operations, the vessel will be fitted with two SCHOTTEL EcoPeller azimuth thrusters, type SRE 560. These hydrodynamically optimised units provide high manoeuvrability while maintaining low noise and vibration levels, an important factor for stealth operations and the effective use of onboard sonar systems.

In addition, Ratownik will be equipped with two SCHOTTEL TransverseThrusters, type STT 3, to improve manoeuvrability during port operations and offshore missions. The propulsion setup features a redundant configuration, increasing operational safety and ensuring continued performance in critical situations.

An auxiliary and emergency propulsion capability will be provided by a SCHOTTEL Retractable RudderPropeller SRP 260 R. Retracted into the hull during transit, the unit can be deployed when additional thrust or enhanced dynamic positioning performance is required. All propulsion components are specially adapted for operation in ice-prone waters.

Setting a new standard in naval rescue

With a length of approximately 96 metres and a displacement of around 6,500 tonnes, Ratownik will be among the largest rescue vessels operating in the Baltic Sea. The ship is designed to support unmanned systems and rescue helicopters, and will be equipped with cranes, remotely operated vehicles and a firefighting system. Its modular design allows for flexibility and adaptation to mission-specific requirements.

Once in service, Ratownik is expected to set a new benchmark for naval rescue operations in the region, combining advanced propulsion technology with versatile mission capabilities.
