Built by Incat Tasmania for South American ferry operator Buquebus, the 130-meter vessel will soon begin operations between Buenos Aires and Uruguay, offering zero-emission travel across the River Plate. The fully battery-electric ferry will transport up to 2,100 passengers and 225 vehicles per journey.

This marks the ninth vessel delivered by Incat to Buquebus, underscoring a long-standing partnership focused on innovation in sustainable maritime transport.

The ship is powered by an Energy Storage System (ESS) weighing over 250 tonnes, with a capacity exceeding 40 megawatt-hours—making it the largest maritime battery system ever installed, four times bigger than any previous application. The ESS connects to eight electric-driven waterjets supplied by Wärtsilä, enabling high-speed, clean propulsion.

Next steps include the completion of the vessel’s interior, featuring a 2,300-square-meter duty-free retail deck—the largest shopping area ever built on a ferry. Final fit-out, battery installation, and energy system integration are set to proceed ahead of sea trials scheduled later this year on the River Derwent.
